Artificial hedges - Final touches to our backyard revamp

As you know we started to give the exterior of our house and backyard some love and a bit of a revamp last year. The pool area was the last thing we needed to complete.

We knew that we wanted to paint the fences, pool pavers and cabana white to tie in with the rest of the outdoor space but the planting around the pool had us stumped. We definitely wanted some greenery in the area but over the last 15 years we had tried so many plants - palms, succulents and climbing jasmine just to name a few but nothing could survive the harsh sun and the fact that the planter box was so shallow.  It would get so hot the roots of the plants would fry no matter how much we watered them.

When we came across the artificial hedges from Garden Wonderland we decided to give them a go after hearing some great reviews. We decided on the Expandable Photinia Green Leaf Trellis 1m x 2m as we liked the size of the leaves and the colour. It was easy to install on our fence.

Simon used Nylon Irrigation Hose Saddles from Bunnings to mount each panel on the fence. He used 6 saddles per panel. It is easy to hide the saddles amongst the leaves.

We installed our panels vertically due to the dimensions of our fence but you can choose to install it vertically or horizontally depending on the space you have. We slightly overlapped each panel so the joins weren't as obvious.  I also "faffed" about with some of the leaves to ensure that there were no gaps and the hedge looked even. The hedges are high quality and UV protected. They have been tested to withstand thousands of hours under UV light.

Some technical data from our job......our 2 fences are different lengths and heights.
Our right wall is 12m long x 1.42 high. 9 trellises cover 10m of the 12m wall. I wanted to still have some of the white fence visible so the greenery wasn't overwhelming.
The left wall is 11.4m long and 1.74m high. 9 trellises covers 9.45m of the 11.4m wall.
The reason why 9 trellises cover a smaller distance on the left wall is because that wall is higher, meaning those trellises stretch further to reach the height but become narrower as a result.

It was a quick and easy job but it really made a huge difference! All up it probably took Simon 2 hours to install 18 panels.

We are so happy with the difference to the pool area and overall feel of our outdoor space. It just feels fresh, clean and adds to the whole low maintenance, simple vibe we were going for in the backyard.

Here are some photos of the end result.....

It's always fun to include some Before and After photos to really appreciate the difference.....

I hope that helps you with any questions you have regarding the artificial hedges we used.
I'm so happy that this was the last of our jobs to be completed around the house.
It really was the finishing touch for the pool area.

Christmas Day 2017

Merry Christmas! How was your Christmas Day?

It was a lovely relaxed Christmas at home. It was a smaller group this year as we have family overseas and out of state.

Here's a snippet of our day .......

The boys laid out their Santa sacks and left some treats out for Santa and his reindeers. I love that there is still belief in the Christmas magic in the house.

One of my favourite parts of Christmas is setting the table for Christmas lunch.
Hydrangeas always say Summer and Christmas to me so I kept things simple with several bunches of them in the middle of the table, a faux garland weaved around them and a few gold baubles.

Once the family started arriving we had a few nibbles and a drink and exchanged gifts.
Our Christmas cocktail this year was a combination of gin, elderflower cordial, lemon juice and soda water. I had a few requests for the recipe and the quantities we used for our mason jars.

So here it is....

Mason jar - 3 litre capacity
400ml Gin
300ml Elderflower Cordial
2 litres Soda Water
Juice from 2 large lemons
(or 3 smaller lemons)
Garnish with lemon wedges and ice.

All the trimmings for lunch. Pork, crackling, turkey, roast veggies, corn, potato gratin, stuffing balls and fresh bread rolls. Gravy, apple sauce + cranberry sauce on the side.
Noah especially loved the Christmas crackers this year and was very keen to hear all of the jokes inside! The jokes were as still as corny as ever!

Dessert was Simon's pavlova and my Malteaser/Raspberry Ice cream cake.
Also a small plum pudding and custard for the traditionalists ;)

The boys finished off the day with a swim and it was Christmas over for another year.

How was your Christmas Day? Did you host at your place?

The weekend - we survived the heat wave!

So we survived the heat wave over the weekend, how did you go?!

It was a very quiet few days we barely got out of the pool!

I've popped up a few photos from the last few days.......

The pool, the hose and anything water related was a hit this weekend.

I kept the bedroom feeling cool and airy with light colours.

We had this platter and a jug of Pimms when friends came over, perfect nibbles while watching the kids in the pool and then joining them!

I bought some new prints for the walls, I am keeping this summery, holiday vibe going!

I was busy packing orders and sending out crystals. Also the full moon over the weekend was perfect for cleaning and charging crystals. I've almost sold out of most things so will be putting a few new pieces up this week.

After lots and lots of use this weekend, the pool toys no longer look like this!
The swan has a busted wing, the pineapple has a hole in it and the donuts are looking super faded. This was their last summer!

Simon and I squeezed in a dinner with friends at a burrito bar. The frozen margaritas were going down a treat in this weather!

How was your weekend? Are you feeling tired and water logged too?

A summer weekend.

Most of the week was constant rain so we were really happy to see the sun come out over the weekend. We went to a wedding on the beach, drank grapefruit margaritas (well Simon and I did) and then had a lazy day at home with all the pool toys and an inflatable castle.
We enjoyed the sunshine and the feeling that summer had returned!

I brought our old dining table back inside this week as our round one had started to split. I'm enjoying the change while we get it fixed. Noah's favourite toy Woody had a little accident. Just like the movie! It was just a popped seam and we managed to sew him up so he is almost as good as new ;)

How was your weekend? I hope you got to enjoy a little sun x
