I'm a little excited as we are doing a few improvements to our house. Simon and I bought the land over 10 years ago and built a Masterton house on the block. At the time we had stretched ourselves to the limit to buy the house so all our fittings and fixtures were what was in our budget. Not necessarily the things we loved. But now the time has come when we can afford to upgrade our space.
Exciting times!! I have been pouring over my old "Dream House" files and Pinterest and my taste hasn't changed over the last few years so I think I can feel confident in our choices.
One of the major changes to the house will be our flooring. Currently we have a cream tile and we are going for a huge change as we are going to have dark timber floors. I love the look of a dark floor and a white wall. Now, I know you are all going to tell me that they are a NIGHTMARE to keep clean but I won't listen ;) I want these floors and am prepared to vacuum twice a day if I have to! As we have to lay the boards on the tiles it will be a Bamboo floating floor in a strand woven bamboo. We have chosen the darkest chocolate colour although they call it Distressed Modern Black.
The floor is being delivered today but it won't be layed for a couple of weeks. So now I have this huge pile of timber in the living room. Oh well, it will all be worth it.
After the floors, we are repainting the walls. Kids, me moving furniture and decorating have left the walls looking a little tired. I am ready for some white freshness.
This painting with the floors is going to be a major change to the house. I really feel like it will give the whole space a lift and a newness. I'll share tomorrow with you what we are doing with the kitchen & bathrooms.

We have a Masterton home with a pale polished porcelain tile floor ( which is lovely but freezing) but my dream floor is the dark timber! I'm of the opinion that NO floor is easy to keep clean, especially when there are little people around! I already vacuum once a day, so whether it's this house or our next house, I won't be talked out of a dark timber either!

ReplyDeleteI have original jarrah floor boards, that we restored when we ripped out the ghastly green carpet they were hiding behind. I dont find them hard to keep clean I use one of those soft mop brooms once a week (if that!) and give them a mop with timber cleaner and hot water about once every 3 weeks (if that!). P.S. I hate cleaning :)

DeleteI Love floorboards! We have them all through our little terrace and whilst they do build up the dust (probably from the dog walking in and out all day), they look amazing and are so easy to sweep or vacuum.

DeleteFloor boards are so much better then tiles. They are less cold, retain heat, easy to clean and best of all if you drop something you have a 50/50 chance of it not smashing like tiles do. Can't wait to see the final product :)

DeleteOh how exciting Simone! I can't wait to see your reno's unfold. I am always in to sticking beaking at everyone's reno's... because it's what I'd love to be doing. But like yourselves, we are a little stretched right now, as we only purchased our place 2.5 years ago. I long for the day we can update everything to the look we really want... few more years yet though.
ReplyDeleteIn saying that, I do love our floorboards. They're a dark timber. But the tiles in the kitchen aren't so great, would like to get rid of those. And the carpet upstairs has to go eventually too.
I also like the white walls look... unfortunately the owners before us painted a dark salmon coloured feature wall in the living and dining areas... I've never really taken to it.

I think in a way we will appreciate the reno's even more since we have waited. I'm really sure of what I like now :) Also lovely to get a whole new place after 10 years. I can see how a salmon wall would take a bit of getting used to! xx
DeleteAwesome, we love our bamboo floors and have had them put into 2 houses now..they are great and suprisingly easy to keep clean as they dont show the scuff marks as much. How exciting...x

ReplyDeleteI have pine floorboards and really dislike the look of them when they just have the varnish on them and they are knotty and look yellow. So with ours we stained them with 50% strength walnut and satin varnish. They are perfect. Some days I think I could have gone a bit darker with them, but thankful I didn't because you can see the DUST and scratches easy. Also glad I went satin and not gloss, because with gloss you can see foot prints.

ReplyDeleteHow exciting with all the reno work happening...we have floorboards throughout the house, old oak type (great with our Golden Labrador retriever and kids), but I now wish that we went with either all white or all dark. Perhaps in our next home...
